edit: Finally I finished a German essay I had to make...(in the form of a letter) I hope it is made right, but without doubt there's many errors, grammatically or otherwise. check it:

-----

-Samir
------

So, was sagst ihr?

cz, I hate to rain on your parade (actually, no I don't ;) :D ), but that's just terrible. ALL nouns in german begin with caps (thus Zug, Woche, Stimme, Zorn, etc). Also:
- mitt? No, "mit".
- ich hat tun? No, "ich habe getan", or, in this case, "ich getan habe".
- ... HABEN passiert... or, if you wanted singular, HAT passiert...
- die merkWürdigste...
- Ich vermisse (no -n) EUCH...
- and last but not least, "was SAGT ihr?" --> Ich sage, du sagst, er/sie es sagt, wir sagen, ihr sagt, sie sagen.

There are some other mistakes, but I don't want to crush you completely. ;)

they're mad because you post porn stuff alot without warning.

did you not mean to? how'd that happen??

Former castleva
08-27-2003, 10:33 AM
Let´s see here.
You posted a picture of a black woman with male genitals.

...Such material is not highly wanted around KFO as far as I know, but on the other hand I got the idea that there was simply something wrong with your link.
I get the idea that it was not what you tried to post? (But that is what I saw, along with a few others like Ming Yue)

Ming Yue
08-27-2003, 10:38 AM
WAIT.... I know what happened...

you hotlinked to an image on somethingawful.com. Thier server reported that you were linking remotely to one of thier pictures and put that placeholder about stealing bandwidth in it's place.

you can't directly link to other people's websites. some sites will let it go, but other sites will yank the image and replace it with one like what we saw.

Hotlinking is no good, as most of the materials on the web are copyrighted...

THAT's what happened. be careful where you link to, that's all..

chen zhen
08-27-2003, 10:47 AM
If u looked at Subitais first link, then u'll know what kind of pics I tried to post. I copied innocent pics of Shaolin monks, and they turned out as pics of nude trans'es. WTF is those sickos on somethingawful thinking of?!

Cool to try to revive the theme song contest;)

hey i made a French text today, had to..;)

here it is:

The eliminativists don't think "higher-level sciences" have any real meaning - in other words, the only reason psychology exists is because we don't know enough biology; and, presumably, the only reason biology exists is because we don't know enough chemistry... and then I suppose physics.

Reminds me of some of the things you have said here.

(This would be contra straight reductionists who, while they might take biology and psychology to be describing the same phenomenon, they don't infer this to mean psychology's insights are invalid in light of biology; and contra Fodorites who would take psychology to not just be equally valid, but be preferential for those specific things it has adapted to study)

Can you elaborate?

I'm just teasing; as always, don't take me too seriously. You seem to prefer the stricter biological stuff over more psychological neurology, etc is all...

Thanks for the article on the reptile brain; I hadn't heard of that group before. I'm not very sold on a hardcore localizationist stance of the brain, which alot of people discussing the "reptile brain" seem to fall into... but I think neo-Darwinian insights about the evolutionary/selectionary basis of behavior are very important... kind of introductory to tell, but they seemed to do a good job at telling that story.

IMHO, this is the main idea Freud was trying to make people keep in mind when he biologized primal/archetypical bits of humanity that other people wanted to see as "strictly psychological." He was very influenced by Darwin, and to him the human, no matter how odd his psychology appeared was "strictly" an animal governed by the selectionist evolution which spawned him - all else must come from that. This is probably one of the most misunderstood aspects of Freud's thought, as people get hung up on the language he used to try to convey this.

Oh wait, my icon isn't Freud anymore, ******... I'll have to think up something pertinent to say about Zelda on this topic...

I see.As far as I remember reading it,the particular branch seemed to suggest two interpretations of-,another would be high on reductionism.

"I'm just teasing; as always, don't take me too seriously. You seem to prefer the stricter biological stuff over more psychological neurology, etc is all..."

Advice accepted.
That´s true for long.

It´s a nice one, including much more than the reptile part.
Evolutionary category of this sort was brought up by Paul McLean (has a few books out). The model known as "triune brain" (in case you did not know).
I think that this kind of an application is among the greater gifts for neuro/behavioral science.Well,at least I won´t get bored quite as easily.
Anything to say about neuroethology?

Yep... I like Luria (http://www.comnet.ca/~pballan/Functsystems.htm) for this kind of stuff. I think the recent tendancy to be very anatomical, rather than functional, is a little misguided. One of my old profs said once, "If you took a transistor out of a radio and the radio started screeching at you, would you conclude that the job of that transistor was to prevent screeching? ... then why would you approach the brain that way?"

I think new insights are showing that a strict isolationist/localizationist/anatomical, rather than functional, approach to the "triune brain" concept can be very limited. For instance, from work on the delusions linked previously, it's starting to look like the limbic system is very involved in what we would otherwise call "upper-level" or "primate-brain" functions.

Looking at the anatomy on a different axis, I find the question as to whether the two hemispheres constitute two "brains" to be more interesting, really...

Anything to say about neuroethology?

Have only been interested in human behavior, really. Some of the neuroethology work on altruism and violence (inter- vs intra-species) I find pretty fascinating with regards to its implications for social problems though...

OK.Should you recommend some work of his, which hints at this thinking, what would it be?

I think it would be very tough going unless you're very interested in learning it. You could leaf through his Project for a Scientific Psychology (http://www.in-the-money.com/artandpap/Freud's%20Project.DOC) and see if it interests you at all... there's alot of insights there, though, that you'd identify with from the position of neuroethology, if you can get past their presentation.

Freud's pleasure principle, one of the consistent foundations of his thought, for instance, is little different than neuroethological work on the dopaminergic reward circuit (http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/video/gardner/read.html). In a way, you can think of Freud's work as trying to create a complete psychology that arises entirely from these basic biological principles. Ironically, he is often interpreted these days to be very psychological - that is, he is imagined to believe in all sorts of intangible, high-level psychological structures that make up the mind. In fact, this is far more true of contemporary cognitive psych (where there are things like "consciousness" and "metacognition" that sit around doing things... and also all sorts of independant functions which simply seem to exist rather than having any derivation from basic biological principles) than Freud (where upper-level stuff is almost accidental - it's all the pleasure principle and such "doing" stuff). This is why the humanists compare Freud to Darwin, and both to Copernicus - in how they each tore down a wall between man and nature. Freud's challenge was against any scientific idea of a unique human soul which made up the mind.

Zelda? (That´s an odd avatar btw).

It's an old Nintendo game... this is one of the bosses. You play your flute and he splits into smaller bosses. It's pretty cool.

In fact, this is far more true of contemporary cognitive psych (where there are things like "consciousness" and "metacognition" that sit around doing things) than Freud (where upper-level stuff is almost accidental - it's all the pleasure principle and such "doing" stuff... and also all sorts of independant functions which simply seem to exist rather than having any derivation from basic biological principles). This is why the humanists compare Freud to Darwin, and both to Copernicus - in how they each tore down a wall between man and nature. Freud's challenge was against any scientific idea of a unique human soul which made up the mind."

Yeah.
Thanks for those links.

"It's an old Nintendo game... this is one of the bosses. You play your flute and he splits into smaller bosses. It's pretty cool."

Now I see.I sure do know that game.I am an enthusiast but have never really learned to play that one.
