So what is the scientific explanation for music?

Former castleva
07-16-2003, 04:29 AM
As the article seems to point out, there´s no hard-and-fast explanation for "Why is Music?"
If that´s what you meant.

chen zhen
07-16-2003, 04:35 AM
No, i meant "why do humans have this ability to analyse rythms, and see it as "music"", to sound more scientific.

Former castleva
07-16-2003, 04:46 AM
Well, obviously humans have the capacity to do that, but as said,it is existent among certain other animals.
Some zoologists seem to suggest that singing birds get a kick out of their songs,in terms of hormonal arousal which I´d think,is not all that far from it in terms of fun.You could speculate that our ancestors had "moods" from producing music, which there has been a long ago since cultural big bang at the very least. The thing is that it is a bit hard to say whether it actually has a lot of advantage over anything,so perhaps it developed by "accident" along with other brain evolution, just my thoughts.

I'm more interested in seeing scientifical proof of buddhist doctrines, than on Dhyana being "healthy". that really explains itself, in the end..:o

I read an interesting book once, where the author was comparing the Buddhist doctrines with modern scientifical discoveries, in the fields of psycology, cosmology (sp?), quanto-physics, etc.
Really an eye-opener, that one..:o

The Dali Lama himself said if science proves something about Buddhism wrong than Buddhism must change accordingly. In the Tibetan isolation period when the Dali Lama was young, Tibetins beleived the world was flat, and of course this has now changed!:)

Those are some of the most biased sites I've seen in a while.

Despite what those sites would have you believe, there are palestinian terrorists. Now, I don't doubt that israel uses some pretty **** poor methods, but they have the same goal has the palestinians. they're just in a position of power, which makes people see them as the bad guy. Both israel and palestine commit horrible attrocities in an atempt to erase the other from existance.

Just my opinion, naturally.

"Those are some of the most biased sites I've seen in a while."

Yes, extremely.:(

Things are not as simple. It has a long history, going back 100 years, which I can't go into now.

The Israelis have very sophisticated methods of political, military and intelligence(mossad). Their acts are in the work of an organised state, while the Palestinian acts are the work of isolated groups. The palestinian society is non-existant, is under total occupation. They live in anarchy.
They don't both have just causes.

shaolin kungfu
07-16-2003, 12:33 PM
I wasn't implying they had just causes, I was saying both a ****ed up beyond explanation. Wheteher it's a state sponsored assasination of a palestinian, or a terrorist car bombing in the gaza strip. And, naturally, nothing is ever as simple as that .

But anyways, lets get politics off ORA, it's harshin my buzz.

shaolin kungfu
07-16-2003, 01:17 PM
Never heard of it. But I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

Here's a short history of some mossad failures....

" Like its United States counterpart (the CIA), Mossad has endured some very public blunders that have tarnished its reputation. In 1998, five agents were arrested by Swiss authorities after they were discovered trying to install surveillance equipment in a Bern apartment. Four were released and one spent two months in prison before being returned to Israel. The incident damaged what was considered a close relationship with the Swiss government, and prompted the resignation of Mossad ex-Chief Danny Yatom.

A year prior to the embarrassment in Switzerland, a failed assassination attempt strained relations with Jordan. Not only did Mossad agents fail to dispose of Khalid Meshall, a high-level Hamas official, but subsequent efforts to appease the Jordanian government resulted in the release of Hamas founder Shaykh Ahmad Yasin from an Israeli prison.

In January 1974, Mossad agents misidentified and killed a Moroccan waiter in Norway as the mastermind of the plot that killed Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Germany.

It was, however, the more recent intelligence failures -- including the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin -- that led Mossad to take drastic measures to repair its image and reassert its position as one of the world's premier intelligence gathering agencies."

Did you all know that avitar is a sanskrit word? The definition Avatar= alternate forms or incarnations assumed by a god. Krishna was an avatar of Vishnu. Thought that was kind of interesting.

Mother Teresa didn't say she got messages from god, she helped the sick, dying and poor. nothing phoney at all!

Actually, there's a little more to it than that.

First off, she did lots of kind of sketchy things like writing letters to the parole boards to get S&L scandal and other white collar criminals out of prison in exchange for them letting her and her people use their private jets.

Second, helping people in her organization always took a back seat to their really illogical vows to run their clinics in the simplest way possible. There were lots of organizations that attempted to donate expensive medical supplies to Theresa's organization and she always refused. The mission was more focussed on providing a monastic venue for nuns to work with the sick than it was on actually alleviating as much suffering as possible.

I'm not saying Mother Theresa was evil, just that she wasn't the saint that she is often portrayed as.

Former castleva

I´d love to comment on it but they have not shown it here as far as I know.
There´s one chapter left of "Walking with prehistoric beasts",computer animated reconstruction.
I think they´re both by BBC?
It´s the show that discusses human evolution that you´re talking about? I´d love to comment since these are the areas of "expertise" of mine, but cannot.

shaolin kungfu
07-19-2003, 09:51 AM
oh well. They'll probably show it over there sometime soon. It's by the same people as walking with prehistoric beasts, if i remember right. Whenever though show any of the "walkin with.." shows, it's always on the discovery channel, but I'm not sure that's who produced it.

EDit: yeah, it talks about human evolution. I liked it, but it did kind of look a little like people in suits. Although the suits are well done.:)

Former castleva

I think the illustrations were very good and for this time,as realistic as it gets.
What ****ed me off while watching otherwise excellent "walking with preh." was that in favour of a great drama, they had to cut off some science, actually pretty much at times. And to notice that, does not take a degree in paleosciences.
They seemed to literally make-up so much of the BEHAVIOR of the species, australopithecines as a crude example, that I found myself biting nails during a time or two (a metaphor)
The shots taken were probably the best available, plenty of it by "comparative ethology" (term,my own) but that does not cut the mustard for all of the time.Considering that this stuff is for general public, there´s little place for mistakes.

The last chapter was yesterday, featuring pleistocene period.

Former castleva
07-19-2003, 10:05 AM
LMAO they actually censored "p-i-ssed" in that context. :D

shaolin kungfu
07-19-2003, 10:07 AM
Yeah. But then again, all tv(at least over here) doesn't always rely on facts. Oh well, geuss that's just the way it goes.

How would you rank it for exposing people to a subject they may find interest in?

Edit: the censors are a bit crazy around here.

Former castleva
07-19-2003, 10:17 AM
"Yeah. But then again, all tv(at least over here) doesn't always rely on facts. Oh well, geuss that's just the way it goes."

Well, yes but what we are talking about here is class science (I know that in your lovely country, you can air pseudoscientific propaganda to "refute" programs like "walking with") :)

I´m not saying it was flawed, but because it (walking with prehistoric beasts) was made in a drama fashion, they gave no chance to represent it as a document. In a field like paleontology...

"How would you rank it for exposing people to a subject they may find interest in?"

Generally very good,I wish he had more programs like this here... :(
I´d give 9 for the illustrations.
7 and a half for science.

I was actually going to buy the book but went for some more technical material. The reading level is 9-12 year olds. :)

"Goody, finally a book i can understand."

He,he,he. :D

"They did kind of the same thing with "walking with cavemen"."

The book is available on amazon but there are no reviews.
The good thing would be that the book is,as far as I know, fairly new, which is great since the field of paleoanthropology changes rapidly and can be very difficult to understand.A general,up to date, easy overview would not hurt.Even as a short reference.

There´s also the book "Walking with Dinosaurs",which I think,is allright if also contains hypotethical "events" and may be a bit slim on science.

Oh yes! That´s just one of the things Midnight Babble can do for you.It is not empirically established yet but we do have a reason to believe that the psychological boost offered by Midnight Babble can help fight cancer,as some rare documented cases show, one may recover from a deadly cancer and boost one´s suppressed immune system with such influences.

If we were not objective as stated, and should we be foolish,we would call that a miracle but naturally we do not since it does not defy any physical laws!!!

So listen to Midnight Babble!!!!

On the subject of pseudo-science, astrology seems to be gaining popularity. Why is this, is there any credibilty to it, and how does it affect peoples lives? Lets hear from our panel of experts.

Kristoffer
07-20-2003, 04:09 PM
Expert One:
Well first of al you gotta think of the children! Please will anyone think of the children?!

Expert two:
Rubbish, pseudo-science was made up by Al Gore, that's common knowledge. This have huge impact on the garbage hunters in southern Colombia. It makes ppl depressed

Former castleva
07-20-2003, 04:11 PM
That´s right. It is present in various magazines (mostly light rags, not science-)
I think it can really affect people´s lives, but of course not because it has any meaning in itself, whatsoever.
Only in the sense of business, pseudoscience is a great business. You can pick up brave astrologists or "certified" psychics to call to,visit etc. to determine your future, what diseases you´re likely to get, what colors to avoid this year and so on.Should we go there, studies show no real correlation between types of personality and their astrological signs.
I think one particular important thing would be to educate the public about such things, the basics of logic, what you should consider credible and on what basis, you know.
Here´s a recent rant from Randi which briefly discusses this matter;

eeehm.. right
well look at the time :D
It's time for a new caller

Who is this?

-Yeah hi this is Bob from Mongolia
Hello Bob, what's on your mind?

-well I would like to say that if we consider the basic structure of the most comprehensive and effective deployment of inductive reasoning in human history. Since its development during the Renaissance, modern science has contributed significantly to our ability to perceive, understand, and manipulate the natural world. Taken generally as a way of acquiring human knowledge, science is a procedure for the invention and evaluation of hypotheses that may be used to explain why things happen as they do. Unlike dogmatic appeals to the absolute, unchallengeable truth of unsupported assertions (as, for example, when a parent tells a child, "Because I say so, that's why."), scientific explanations are always tentative proposals, offered in hopes of capturing the best outlook on the matter but subject to evaluation, modification, or even overturn in light of further evidence.

The most productive model for the structure of a scientific explanation is that of a valid deductive argument whose conclusion is the event to be explained. Some of the premises of this argument will be factual statements of the antecedent circumstances, while the others will be the scientific hypotheses offered as a way of linking those circumstances to the outcome stated by the conclusion. Scientific predictions have exactly the same structure; the only difference between the explanation and the prediction of an event is whether or not it has already occurred.

On this deductive-nomological model for scientific explanation, the conclusion of the argument must be true (that is, the event must occur) if all of the premises are true. Those of its premises that state the antecedent circumstances will naturally be true so long as we have our facts straight. But the truth of the hypotheses, which try to capture the lawlike relationship between those circumstances and the event to be explained, will always remain open to question. So the quality of the explanation as a whole typically rests upon the extent to which these hypotheses are reliable.

This reliability can never be established with absolute certainty. It is sometimes possible to eliminate bad hypotheses by using them as the premises of a deductive argument predicting that particular consequences will follow from a particular set of circumstances and then showing that the predicted event does not, in fact, occur. (This amounts to the use of Modus Tollens to show that since the consequent is false, some part of the antecedent must also be false.) But if the events turn out as predicted, that only tends to confirm the hypotheses; it cannot prove their truth. (Since that would amount to reliance on the fallacy of affirming the consequent.) Empirical evidence typically underdetermines scientific explanation, leaving us with multiple hypotheses, any one of which would account for the facts.

Riight.. Thank you for calling Bob
